Publication Announcement: Dismantling Educational Sexism Through Teacher Education by Dr. Kimberly Pfeifer

I had the pleasure of supervising Dr. Kimberly Pfeifer’s PhD at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, a large part of which was the foundation of her new groundbreaking volume from Routledge. She describes the book in her own words, below:

“The idea for this book came about as both a response to and culmination of learning, events, and the reification of misogynistic structures and ontologies. As a response, this work speaks to the current political climate in the US, re: the results of the 2016 US presidential election, #MeToo movement, the outpouring of stories from survivors of sexual assault, and the notable lack of P-12 schooling conceptualized not only as a site reproducing gendered hierarchies and violence but also as a potential site for the intentional disruption of this sexism. This book also functions as a culmination of the learning, research, and praxis I have been fortunate enough to take part in throughout my time as a doctoral student, candidate, and educational researcher.  Moreover, this entire work, itself, serves as a pause in my own academic pursuits—a pause between completing my doctoral degree and embarking on my journey into becoming a researcher. In speaking to my role as a learner, this work seeks to demonstrate a deep understanding of sexism and schooling, specifically analyzing the ways in which educational sexism and misogyny manifest in learning spaces and ultimately marginalize female students. And while this book, specifically Part I, shows the theoretical and methodological knowledge gained throughout my years as a learner, the second part of this work demonstrates the implications this knowledge can have for pedagogical practice. It is only through this praxis, through the melding of identities of learner, educator, and researcher that this work could be created.”
